Cherwell Laboratories can supply a range of unique, industrial use biological indicators which have been manufactured by Raven Laboratories and Apex Laboratories to specifically meet the requirements of the medical device and pharmaceutical industries. These speciality biological indicators have been developed for applications where spore strips and ampoules are not suitable due to their size, packaging or carrier material.

Several types of industrial use biological indicators are available, each suited to different applications and sterilisation methods:

Spore Discs & Strips

Discs

Spore discs can be used to monitor various sterilisation methods and can be inoculated with a range of spores according to the application including Geobacillus stearothermophilus and Bacillus atrophaeus. Several types and sizes of discs are available including: paper, borosilicate paper and stainless steel.

Stainless Steel Strips

Stainless steel spore strips are intended for use in dry heat ovens at depyrogenation temperatures and are inoculated with Bacillus atrophaeus spores. They are used to correlate sterilisation (spore death) with endotoxin reduction.

Steri-Chart

Suitable for the development of sterilisation cycles, each Steri-Chart unit consists of a set of strips with 5 different populations and a control strip all made from the same spore batch.

The 5 test strips are exposed to determine what level of lethality is being delivered by a particular sterilization cycle.

 

Inoculated Threads & Wires

Cotton Threads

Cotton threads can be used for monitoring sterilisation methods and are available inoculated with a variety of different spores. Threads can be used at the interface of a syringe and plunger to show sterilant penetration and efficacy at that point, they can also be used in tubing and small vials.

Inoculated Steel Wire

Steel wires which have been inoculated with Geobacillus stearothermophilus for use in the validation of small, long lumens. This carrier is best suited for steam applications where the size of the lumen and moisture would make cotton threads difficult to manipulate. Wires can also be made with a closed loop at one end, so a small wire can be attached to make retrieval easier.

 

Validating Sterilisation Cycles for Tubing

ProLine

A single use, biological indicator system designed for use in the validating steam or ethylene oxide sterilisation cycles for tubing ranging from 1/8” to 5/8” diameter.

Each device contains a filter paper inoculated with Geobacillus stearothermophilus (steam) or Bacillus atrophaeus (EO).

 

Biological Indicators for Hydrogen Peroxide Vapour Sterilisation

Cherwell Laboratories supplies a range of Apex Biological Indicator products which have been designed specifically for pharmaceutical, food and medical device industries which utilise Hydrogen Peroxide (H₂O₂) vapour sterilisation. The stainless steel carrier material is designed for use with isolator and filling line applications. The range includes:

Apex Discs

Tyvex packaged discs (0.35” diameter x 0.003” thick), with perforations for hanging and a thumb notch for peeling

Apex Ribbons

Bare stainless steel ribbons measuring 0.25” x 2.75” and inoculated at one end

Tri-Scale

3 carriers inoculated with different spore concentrations and sealed in separate compartments
